The tragedy following the deadly earthquake in Haiti leaves none of us untouched. Our condolences go to the people of Haiti, as well as to the United Nations and the international community for the great loss of life they suffered. Our minds are also with the health professionals and personnel currently on the ground working hard to save lives.

Welcome to the website of the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WADEM). Our association was originally founded 33 years ago as the Club of Mainz on 2 October 1976. This explains why our logo still contains the logo of the city of Mainz, Germany. Following the constant development of its scope and extension worldwide, and to better reflect its global mission, the name was changed to the World Association for Disaster and Emergency Medicine.

Please take your time to explore our site. Find out who we are and how we work to improve the everyday delivery of prehospital and emergency health care and enhance disaster health and preparedness. Take a look at our official publication Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, now in its 25th volume. If you are already heavily involved in disaster health and disaster management, download some or all of the chapters from our publication, Health Disaster Management: Guidelines from Evaluation and Research.

We recently convened the 16th World Congress on Disaster and Emergency Medicine (WCDEM) in Victoria, Canada. The WCDEM is our association's biannual event. Currently, we are planning for the 17th WCDEM in Beijing, China in June 2011. Above all, note that we are an association of health care professionals sharing a similar vision. Currently we have members from 55 countries and we are eager to include within our ranks more contributing professionals worldwide! Prehospital and Disaster Medicine (PDM), now in Volume 25, is the official journal of the World Assocation for Disaster and Emergency Medicine. PDM is one of the leading scientific journals focusing on prehospital and disaster health. It is the only peer-reviewed international journal in its field, published bi-monthly, providing a readable, usable worldwide source of research and analysis.

All members of WADEM receive a subscription to PDM as a part of their annual membership dues.
